About Me
Combining Copper & Wood Since 2017
If someone had said 2 years ago I would be designing and making furniture and household objects I would not have believed them!
I would love to be able to say that I had an epiphany to create things from wood and copper but it didn’t really happen like that! It all came about after a very difficult situation where I ended up suffering from anxiety and depression. ‘Instead of tinkering away in your workshop could you do something useful and make me a shelf for just above the dishwasher?’ was the request from my wife. That was the start. I had some old floorboards and copper pipe left over from a previous refurbishment project in our house and I just started ’tinkering’. I discovered that I really enjoyed the design process and sketching out ideas. Planing and sanding the humble floorboards brought out the quirkiness of the grain and oiling them uncovered their natural beauty.
Why Copper?
The copper seemed to complement the wood and was robust and just a bit different. My wife loved it and asked for a shelf above the radiator in the kitchen to match with a towel rail for tea towels. Mmmm that took a bit more thinking and designing. Next came coat hooks and the biggest project was a new dining table to be ready for Christmas. By this time I had run out of wood but discovered our local wood recycling project had what I needed. Everyone was friendly and helpful and wanted to talk ‘wood’. They were interested in my ideas and projects. Around this time I began to feel I had a purpose again so I invested in workshop equipment and set to work making items for family and friends. Every item is unique by its nature and handcrafted with the owner in mind. I am not out of the ‘wood(s)’ yet but Plum Tree Copperworks is helping to rebuild me and my family.
